Accountability kick off...

Posted on

This past week was an opportunity to showcase creativity and imagination through the dramatic arts. Quest Theatre has been with us for the last three days working with students at all grades with a focus on wellness, physical movement and imagination. Through drama activities and games, students have worked to creatively solve problems with space to make mistakes, building relationships and engage in physical literacy with a framework. Whether it be by creating a portrait of favourite woodland creatures with their bodies or problem solving ways to support inclusion for all, the students had a blast! Thank you to Mrs Hammad for organizing this opportunity for our students! In addition to the production and workshops, our week began with our kick off assembly introducing out second pillar from our PBIS matrix, Accountability. As I shared with students this is a big word with great importance and we will spend the next couple of weeks explicitly teaching and talking about Accountability. I would encourage you to do the same at home. Specifically, our focus this week was the importance of making good choices to be prepared whether that is choosing to get a good sleep, preparing school bags/lunches ahead of time or putting in the work to prepare for a test. Being prepared is a big part of being accountable and accountability to ourselves, others and community. Two highlights from our assembly was Constable Epp and Constable Moore's talk about the importance of being safe, another aspect of accountability that we will be talking about as well as Mr Dupre and my acting debut. Oscar level performance for Mr Dupre in our video called "Be Your Best Self" which is the final aspect of accountability we are focussing on! Thank you to Mrs Wicktor Neumeister for writing, directing and producing our video. Please ask your student about it! And finally, a shout out to our Westside Leadership students who spent Thursday volunteering at the Airdrie Food bank. As always and eye opening experience and an opportunity for our students to reflect about the blessings in our lives that we often take for granted.

Next week is our last five day week prior to Spring Break. Westside Leadership students will be away at Springbank Middle School for the Spring Jamboree on Tuesday. Badminton culminates for the grade 8 athletes as they have their Divisional tournament on Thursday at the Sunridge Badminton Center. Go Grizzlies! Friday we have eight student scientists, who advanced from our school science fair, compete in the Calgary Youth Science Fair at the Olympic Oval. Given the quality of our student's projects and presentations, I know that they will do great! Thank you Mrs. Summerscales for all your support and work for this initiative.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone,

Mrs Moore
