Literacy Team: Mrs. Veilleux
Early Literacy Program Overview: The Literacy program at Banded Peak school provides individualized reading support in a small group setting to students in grades one to four. Students who require support with reading (decoding as well as comprehension) are referred to the Early Literacy teacher by the home room teacher based on results of literacy assessments and observation.
The Early Literacy program also works closely with the teachers from Kindergarten to grade 8 to assist with administering and interpreting literacy assessments.
Literacy Programs:
- Phonics - Lively Letters: “Lively Letters is a research-based program that trains students in the critical skills of phonemic awareness, letter sound associations, and the ability to decode (read) and encode (spell) words fluently.”
- From Sounds to Spelling: This is also a comprehensive phonics program providing explicit, and sequential instruction on skills needed to decode (read) and encode (spell) words.
- Kindergarten to grade 4 teachers use components of the Lively Letters and/or From Sounds to Spelling programs in their classrooms. These programs are also used in the Early Literacy program to provide consistency.
- Phonemic Awareness Programs - Heggerty: Classroom teachers use the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program to teach this important foundational skill to their whole class.
- Equipped for Reading Success: The Early Literacy program uses this resource to individualize phonemic awareness support for students receiving small group support.
- Fluency/vocabulary/comprehension: Classroom teachers and the early literacy program use both decodable and leveled books to provide support or enrichment as needed for fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
- Book Club: All students in the grade 3 and 4 classrooms are grouped to provide focused, strategic literacy support during the silent reading block. These groups are led by the classroom teachers as well as the literacy teacher.
